Frequently Asked Questions

Charities and Donations

Why doesn't the donation cost me anything?

Our clients pay us to put their wallpaper on your screen. To say thank you for receiving it, we make a donation on your behalf to your chosen charity. The donation is exactly 75% of the amount the advertiser pays us for that distribution.

What do the statistics on the home screen indicate?

Backers are the users supporting a particular cause on Little Lot. Backers are working towards a Current Goal. When the Current goal is reached, Little Lot will pay out this amount to the charity. The number of times completed shows how many times a charity has reached a goal. My Cause is the total raised for this charity; All Causes is the amount raised across all charities on Little Lot New Zealand.

Why do the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy refer to contributions not donations?

Little Lot has a legal agreement with each of our partner charities. Part of the agreement is an arrangement to promote Little Lot to each charity's database of donors. In return for this promotion, we pay them 75% of the revenue we collect for wallpapers distributed to users supporting their cause. This is treated as an exchange of services by the IRD, and subsequently the payments are named 'contributions' not 'donations'. The only difference is that we pay GST on top of the payment (i.e. we pay 75%+GST).

Can I nominate a charity to receive donations from Little Lot?

Yes, you can nominate any charitable entity to become a beneficiary on Little Lot. You can make your nomination here.

Can I change my chosen charity?

Yes, you can change the charity that receives your donations from within the Causes section of each application.

Why doesn't the donation to my charity move up every day?

Unfortunately not every wallpaper we distribute has a donation associated with it. As a new advertising channel with a relatively small audience, we struggle to sell all our inventory. To keep the content fresh, we do a lot of free trials with new clients. As we grow and become more established, we will be able to sell more wallpapers. Until then, we can only ask that our early adopters keep the faith and help us reach critical mass.

Does installing Little Lot on two computers (or two smartphones) double my donation?

Yes, every single device you add earns donations for your chosen charity. You simply install and log in with the same account as your first install and you're away!

Business

How do I advertise on Little Lot?

Check out our Advertise Page to read more about the benefits of advertising on Little Lot and to download our Rate Card.

Why do the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy refer to Donate Your Desktop Ltd?

Little Lot first launched as Donate Your Desktop but rebranded a year and a half later. Although we trade as Little Lot now, we haven’t changed our legal company name.

Technical

The Little Lot website is telling me I’m in an Unsupported Country but I’m in New Zealand?

To protect the value of our advertising for our clients, we block people from outside NZ from downloading Little Lot. We do this using an Internet Protocol (IP) address check - if you are receiving this message, then our database doesn’t have your IP listed as being in NZ. If you are using a laptop, tablet or smartphone, all you need to do is find a different wifi connection to try. If you are on a desktop, please send us an email and we will try to whitelist your IP.

How much bandwidth does Little Lot use?

The size of the Little Lot wallpapers depend on your screen resolution, so a 27” iMac will use more bandwidth than a 13” mid-range laptop. Generally desktop wallpapers range between 100 - 400KB and mobile 100 - 250KB.

Why don’t the wallpapers match my interests?

As a relatively new business, we don’t always have wallpapers that match your interests exactly. As we become more established as an advertising channel, our content will become more closely matched to your profile.

Can I install the Little Lot application on more than one device?

Yes! You can install our application on as many computers, tablets and smartphones as you like. Each device you add doubles, then triples the amount you were originally donating. After installing on a new device, choose to ‘Log in’ and use the same account you created when you first installed Little Lot.

Security

Can I get a virus or spam through Little Lot?

No, you cannot get a virus or spam through Little Lot. We take security very seriously and have followed best practice around the security of our entire platform. All communication between the application and our server is encrypted

Does the application give people access to my device?

No. The Little Lot applications do not give anyone - not even us - access to your device. They only perform basic functions of requesting and downloading wallpapers. The 'branded wallpaper' image the application downloads is a jpeg image just like any other you would encounter while browsing the net.

Do you store my password?

No, we do not store your password (or Facebook password) locally on your device or on our server. When you create an account and enter a password, we generate an encrypted token for your account which is used to authenticate any communication between the application and our server.

You need to disable your existing Android lockscreen. The location of this feature varies on different Android devices but generally it is under SettingsSecurity.

My age is not displaying correctly?

Occasionally your age may display incorrectly because we do not collect your date of birth if you sign up with email and password. We are planning to fix this in future releases but this error is unlikely to affect your Little Lot experience in the meantime.

Why aren't the wallpapers on my lock screen? Isn't that the point?

Unfortunately Apple won't let apps automatically set the lock screen wallpaper, so the only way that we can have an iOS app is to give you the wallpapers within the app. By viewing them in the app, you're generating an impression that we can charge an advertiser for, so you are creating donations the same way you would be if you had the wallpapers on the lock screen of an Android device.

You can still save them to your Camera Roll (by pressing 'i' in the top left hand of the screen when viewing the wallpapers, then pressing the download button second in) and set them manually from there.

Can I get Little Lot on my Windows phone/tablet?

Can I install Little Lot on Microsoft Windows 7 Starter Edition?

Unfortunately, no. Windows 7 Starter Edition has a built-in restriction which prevents us from changing the desktop wallpaper.

Why can't I install Little Lot on my work computer?

On many work computers, there is an IT policy which stops users from installing applications. If this is the case, you will not be able to install Little Lot on this computer. However, you can always install it on your home PC or laptop.

Even when you are not blocked from installing applications on your work computer, your IT department may have policies in place which prevent you from changing the desktop wallpaper. We do not want to interfere with these policies, so Little Lot cannot be installed if this is the case.

Many large New Zealand companies have networks that use an international proxy server. If this is the case, our website will detect your location as being outside of NZ and block you from downloading the application. We have implemented this geo-block to retain the value of the advertising to our clients, which only want to market to NZ residents. This is an unfortunate side-effect of this decision.

If you work on a laptop, you can simply take it to another internet connection and download and install it. If not, the only solution would be to speak to your IT department about a corporate rollout across the entire network. If this is an option, we can work with your IT department to install an unblocked version of the application on the network.

Why can't I click on the desktop link?

Any web address on the desktop wallpaper is just part of the image; it is not a link. You can either enter the address into your browser or you can click through from the widget. The Little Lot widget is a small semi-transparent control panel that floats above the wallpaper. Clicking on the ‘World’ icon will access the link for this wallpaper.

The Little Lot application only updates Desktop 1, so if you have left your computer on Desktop 2 you may not be noticing the wallpaper changing. If this is not the case, restarting your computer may fix the issue.
